Nay Pyi Taw February 28

Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing received President of United States Institute of Peace (USIP) Ms. Nancy Lindborg at Bayintnaung Parlour here at 4 pm yesterday.

Present at the call together with the Senior General were Chief of the General Staff (Army, Navy and Air) General Mya Tun Oo and Lt-Gen Soe Htut of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army). Ms. Nancy Lindborg was accompanied by former US Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Derek Mitchel and officials.

At the call the Senior General said peace would be difficult if there is no real desire for it. The other parties should understand and accept the democracy practice that calls for the performance of all activities on the multi-party democracy within the legal framework. The Tatmadaw is working in accord with its adopted six peace principles. The NCA was signed only after buying time in holding bilateral negotiations on the discussions and demands of the armed ethnic groups. Hence, peaceful dialogue will be based on the agreement.

President of USIP Ms. Nancy Lindborg and Former Ambassador Mr. Derek Mitchel said that they know Myanmar’s peace process is very complicated and there are many numbers and types of armed ethnic groups in the nation. They expressed their understanding on the current peace-making processes. They said that it needs to build trust of the people. They noted that as the international community reviews Myanmar is weak in response and transparency regarding the issue on Rakhine region, it needs to show more transparent manner on the issue.

The Senior General explained that as a team led by the Vice President is conducting investigation over the issue of Rakhine region while another team led by a Lieutenant-General from the Tatmadaw is carrying out inspection tasks, accusations are much wrong in comparison with the ground situation. The security troops are discharging their duty in line with the law. Correct information on the incidents is released on time. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also releases information to diplomats. So, it needs to review the press releases without bias, he said.

After the meeting, the Senior General and the President of USIP exchanged gifts and posed for documentary photo together with delegation members.
