Japanese companies Yanmar and Mitsui & Co will invest in agricultural research in Japan-backed Thilawa Special Economic Zone in Yangon’s Thanlyin Township.

Yanmar, a diesel engine producer and distributor, will provide technical assistance for Myanmar with mechanical engineering. This is the fi rst investment by Yanmar in Myanmar in partnership with Mitsui & Co.

The two companies will invest in some of agricultural research centres in Myanmar, and the foreign joint venture will be based in Thilawa Special Economic Zone.

The two companies are keen to participate in agricultural modernization and development of domestic food production in Myanmar.

Executive director Takeshi Terada of Yanmar Myanmar Co Ltd said: “Myanmar is already ranked seventh in rice production in the world. And the demand for agricultural equipment has increased and there is a need to fulfill the growing demand to boost the country’s agro-economy.”

Yanmar Myanmar Co will hold 60 percent of stake and Mitsui & Co 40 percent in the joint venture, said chief executive officer Ryotaro Sumi of Mitsui & Co. Mitsui & Co, which produces and distributes agricultural equipment, entered Myanmar market in March, 2016 and currently boasts a workforce of around 100 employees.
